Tips On Aging Well

Although time marches along at the same steady pace for everyone, some people seem much less affected by the aging process than others, keeping dark hair while their peers turn gray on top, for instance, or staying mentally sharp as others become forgetful. As some people enter the latter stage of life, they remain active and engaged with the world, while others withdraw both mentally and physically. According to doctors and psychologists, there are many things that young people can do to keep their bodies and minds younger longer.

Avoid Smoking

Cigarette smoke robs the skin of oxygen and reduces blood circulation, causing the face to show earlier signs of age. In a large study on twins, it was found that twins who smoked were more likely to have wrinkles, under-eye bags, sagging eyelids, and jowls than their twins who did not smoke.

Use Sunscreen

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation leads to wrinkles and irregular pigmentation, often called “age spots.” Of course, UV radiation can also cause skin cancer, which is another good reason to use sunscreen at all times.

Protect Your Bones

Bones weaken with age, often leading to the condition known as osteoporosis. People with osteoporosis look older than their years because of their stooped posture and feeble gait. You can take care of your bones by getting plenty of calcium and vitamin D in your diet and exercising to strengthen the muscles and tendons that support the bones.

Protect Your Cognition

Regular exercise and a healthy diet are crucial to brain health, as is keeping the mind active. Learning new things throughout life will keep the brain sharper longer. Reading books outside your own range of experiences is one way of learning new things, and another is to take classes in things that interest you, like dance or pottery. It’s also important to stay socially active. People who have a lot of positive social contact tend to be happy rather than lonely in their later years.

In addition to these tips, it’s also important to eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight. Gaining and losing weight can result in sagging skin that will contribute to an appearance of age. For more tips on looking your best at any age, check out
